General Health Care for Ukrainian Refugee Children
As of 1 January 2023, children from Ukraine with temporary refuge have access to health care in the same way as Slovak children (from 0-18 years of age inclusive). This health care also covers children from Ukraine with health disadvantages and also covers specialist examinations, medicines, dietetic food, medical devices and treatments for children from Ukraine up to the same level as public health insurance for Slovak children. Specialist examinations without a fee can only be used on the basis of a paediatrician’s recommendation. Medical devices, therapies and treatments can also be requested only on the basis of a specialist doctor’s recommendation. However, specialised medicines and some devices (e.g. nappies) can also be prescribed by a paediatrician.
In practice, it may happen that a provider (doctor, physiotherapist, clinical speech and language therapist and other professionals) refuses to provide medical care for your child because of lack of capacity, or asks you to pay a fee for a service that should be covered by the health insurance company (§ 79 (1) (g) of Act No.578/2004 Coll. on health care providers, health care workers, professional organisations in health care and on amendment and supplementation of certain acts, as amended). The links below can help you check the current amount of health care coverage for your child as well as find available health care in your area. The phone info lines listed above will also provide you with advisory support in Ukrainian.
